PE and Sport Premium Funding at St Monica’s Catholic Primary School
The Primary PE and Sport Premium provides funding to support schools in making additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESPA).
At St Monica’s Catholic Primary School, we use this funding strategically to ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to participate, develop their skills, improve their physical and mental wellbeing, and experience success in PE and sport.
Particular consideration is given to disadvantaged pupils and pupils who may face barriers to participation, including those with additional needs or limited opportunities to access sporting activities outside of school. We use the funding to reduce these barriers and ensure that pupils are not disadvantaged because of their circumstances.
Our use of the PE and Sport Premium is focused on:
- Increasing participation in PE, physical activity and competitive sport.
- Improving the quality and breadth of PE provision across EYFS and Key Stages 1 and 2.
- Supporting disadvantaged pupils to participate fully and access the same opportunities as their peers.
- Developing pupils' physical skills, confidence, teamwork, resilience and leadership skills.
- Providing additional opportunities for pupils who may otherwise have limited access to sport and physical activity.
- Developing staff knowledge, skills and confidence so that improvements are sustainable and continue to benefit pupils in future years.
- Providing opportunities for competition and representation, enabling pupils to experience both individual and team success.
- Identifying and addressing participation gaps so that all groups of pupils are encouraged and supported to engage.
- Embedding physical activity within the wider school culture, rather than viewing PE as an isolated curriculum subject.
Swimming Provision
St Monica’s provides swimming lessons earlier in pupils' primary education, with swimming taking place in Years 3 and 4 rather than Year 6. Therefore, although St Monica’s has Year 6 pupils on roll, our current swimming programme does not include Year 6 pupils.
This explains why some of our PE and Sport Premium reporting may show no Year 6 pupils participating in swimming. This figure should not be interpreted as meaning that the school does not have a Year 6 cohort. Rather, our swimming provision is planned and delivered in Years 3 and 4, allowing pupils to develop their swimming and water-safety skills earlier in their primary education.
We monitor participation and progress in swimming alongside our wider PE provision to ensure that pupils have appropriate opportunities to develop their physical competence and water-safety knowledge.
Monitoring and Impact
We monitor the impact of our provision through participation data, pupil voice, staff feedback, assessment information and observations of pupils' engagement and progress. This enables us to identify pupils and groups who may require additional support and to adapt our provision accordingly.
Our aim is not simply to increase the amount of sport pupils experience, but to ensure that our investment leads to measurable and sustainable improvements in pupils' physical competence, confidence, participation and enjoyment of physical activity.
The Government has identified five key indicators against which schools should demonstrate how their PE and Sport Premium funding is used. St Monica’s uses these indicators to plan, monitor and evaluate the impact of our spending and to ensure that funding is directed towards areas that provide the greatest benefit to pupils.
Our PE and Sport Premium report provides further information about the funding received by St Monica’s, how it has been allocated across the five key indicators, and the impact this investment has had on our pupils, with particular consideration given to disadvantaged pupils and equality of opportunity.
