Design and Technology

Intent

In our primary school curriculum, we prioritise equipping children with essential life skills like mending torn clothes and crafting meals, fostering their confidence in tackling everyday challenges. Through a diverse curriculum that embraces subjects like Design and Technology (D&T), we cultivate a versatile skill set, emphasizing hands-on experiences that nurture independence. Introducing these skills early on lays a strong foundation for future success, instilling qualities like responsibility and innovation. Our purpose-driven curriculum aims to empower students to flourish in the real world, equipping them with indispensable tools for tasks ranging from sewing to culinary endeavours.

Implement

Integrating practical life skills with creative subjects like D&T allows children to grasp direct links to their surroundings. Through our curriculum, practical skills are applied practically, igniting students' curiosity and engagement. Design and technology is done once a term, as per topic blocking, alternating with art. By showcasing how creative subjects intersect with everyday life, we foster an appreciation for their relevance and encourage critical thinking. This approach not only equips students with vital skills but also nurtures a passion for learning and problem-solving. By seamlessly weaving together practical skills and creative exploration, we prepare students for a lifetime of adaptability and innovation, nurturing their creativity and ingenuity along the way.

Impact

Delivering DT lessons has improved our students’ problem solving skills and practical understanding. Regular exposure to DT has encouraged hands-on learning, allowing us to see that our students have developed their designing, planning and creating skills. It has also reinforced the key concepts of DT, teamwork and real-world challenges, preparing our children to recognise and solve faults they may face.
