Curriculum overview

Our Curriculum at St Monica’s Catholic Primary School

At St Monica’s Catholic Primary School, our curriculum is designed to provide every child with a broad, balanced, and engaging education that nurtures their academic, spiritual, moral, and social development.

Rooted in the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2 and the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, our curriculum reflects our belief that every child is unique, with their own talents, interests, and potential to flourish.

Intent

Our aim is to deliver a rich and purposeful curriculum that inspires curiosity and a love of learning. It equips pupils with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to become confident, compassionate, and responsible citizens.

Through carefully planned sequences of learning, children develop:

  • A secure understanding of key concepts across all subjects.

  • The ability to think critically, question deeply, and make connections between ideas.

  • A sense of moral purpose, respect, and empathy for others.

Our curriculum not only meets national expectations but also reflects the Catholic ethos of our school — placing faith, respect, and community at the heart of all we do.

Implementation

Our teaching is creative, inclusive, and responsive, ensuring that every child can succeed. Teachers plan lessons that are engaging, well-structured, and carefully differentiated to meet the needs of all learners.

Learning at St Monica’s is enhanced through:

  • Cross-curricular links that help pupils see the relevance of their learning.

  • Enrichment opportunities, such as visits, workshops, and themed days, that bring subjects to life.

  • A wide range of extra-curricular activities that promote creativity, teamwork, and personal growth.

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, we use Read Write Inc. to teach phonics and early reading. Our pupils also benefit from the Local Authority’s Daily Supported Reading scheme in KS1, and St Monica’s Reading Programme in KS2, ensuring continuity and progression in reading fluency and comprehension.

Impact

We measure the success of our curriculum not only through academic achievement, but also through the personal growth of our children. We want our pupils to leave St Monica’s as:

  • Confident and articulate communicators

  • Independent and reflective learners

  • Respectful and responsible members of society

Through our curriculum, we prepare children for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school — helping them grow into outstanding global citizens who live out our school vision every day.

Our Vision

Together We Learn,
Together We Grow,
Together We Excel.

This vision underpins everything we do at St Monica’s, guiding our teaching, learning, and the way we live and work together as a Catholic community.
